About

Build A Rocket is a Northern California post-punk/alt-rock band rooted in the Bay Area and Delta, leaning into a post-punk, grunge-tinged sound—somewhere between Hot Water Music and Lucinda Williams. Fronted by Jen Carlson—former bass player in Bad Cop/Bad Cop and drummer in Angry Amputees—it’s a move into guitar, vocals, and more personal songwriting. After a decade in SoCal, she moved back to the Delta and met guitarist Jason Taylor in a Delta ghost town—pulled a guitar off the wall of the bar and started jamming. It’s been two years, and they’ve been writing and recording non-stop since.

The lineup rounds out with Russ Jenkins on drums and her brother Johnny Kirk on bass. Raised on the river, the songs pull from San Francisco warehouse years, Delta backroads, and desert miles. They have upcoming shows at Doll Fest and Bottom of the Hill, with a summer tour on the way, and will be releasing their full-length album Proof Of Humanity this summer. The title nods to the idea of having to prove you’re human now, while also reflecting the mistakes and creation that come with it. This first single is about getting lost in your own battles and pushing through what you thought would never break.
